New home owners have often got house plants as house warming gifts for generations and I’m Sure most of us have even given a plant or two ourselves. But leafy greens don’t just add a athletically pleasing additions to your home, and they can also improve your health. A review of the psychological benefits of indoor plants published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology showed that plants inside can boost mood levels, improve reaction time, lower stress, and even boost pain tolerance. The Study of House Plants and Health

Twenty of these studies were analyzed by Swedish and Norwegian researches and they found that houseplants had positive benefits to peoples lives. They lowered anxiety, increased performance in the office or at school, and even lowered blood pressure. On top of this none of these studies showed any negative side effects of indoor plants, only positive or neutral effects. The most damaging thing found in any study is that some didn’t show a significant mood improvement. Another study published in the September 2009 in the US National Library of Medicine showed that when in the hospital patients with plants in their rooms had far less stress, lower blood pressure, and less fatigue than their counterparts in rooms without plants.

They don’t just create oxygen though, they also can clean harmful toxins from the air; up to 87 percent of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) every 24 hours, according to NASA research. What are VOCs? They are found in many items that you might have in your home including formaldehyde which could be present in rugs, cigarette smoke and other products. Benzene is another culprit that is found in inks, paints, books, and printed papers. Additionally, new age buildings have modern climate control settings that can end up trapping these VOCs inside homes and offices creating higher levels. That’s why plants are even more important than ever to have inside your home; they will pull these toxins into the soil and eventually use them as nutrients for themselves. How Many House Plants?
As many as you want! But the minimum will vary depending on your goals.
If you want to reduce stress and improve health place at least one large plant every 130 square feet. This equates to about one 8 inch pot or larger for every 10×10 bedroom. You could also go with multiple smaller plants. Additionally, if this is for an office or classroom make sure every person has a view of at least one plant.
If you want to purify the air you will need a bit larger or a bit more plants. At least 15-20 plants in 6-8 inch pots or larger for a 1800 square foot house. This is about one large plant (8 inch pot) or two smaller plants (4 inch pots) for every 100 square feet. Remember, you can always go higher than the minimum!
