How To Water Succulent Plants – Frequency To Water Succulent Plants

How to water succulent plants. It’s not hard but have you ever wondered how to water succulents? Do you water them the same as your other plants? How much water? How often? Watering any plant can be tricky and it can be even more tricky with succulents if you don’t know what you’re doing. But it doesn’t have to be! It’s very simple and takes much less time than you might think. Killing plants from over watering or under watering can be depressing so let’s explain the way to water your succulents until they thrive.

How To Water Succulent Plants

How Much to Water Succulentshow to water succulent plants?

The exact amount of water will vary depending on how many plants and how much soil you have. But a general rule is you should water succulents until they are soaked. The soil should be wet and completely saturated. This will tell the succulents to drink up because a drought it coming. Just make sure to saturate the soil completely each time you water.

How Often to Water Succulents?

After you soaked your succulents don’t water again until the soil is completely dry! This should take a couple days. You can also wait a few days after the soil is already dry to water again. The plants will use this time of drought to grow more roots to allow them to absorb even more water the next time you water. This is why watering lightly will lead to damaged plants because it doesn’t promote healthy root growth.

As a rule of thumb, I water every 3-4 days in pots with holes and every 3-6 days with pots without. But this doesn’t mean that will be the right schedule for you! The frequency of watering will change depending on your climate and humidity so the best rule is to see when your soil is dry and base it off that. If you live in a dry climate you’ll need to water more often. If it’s humid, less often.

After your succulents have been growing for a while they will need less frequent watering as well. I’ve had succulents survive when I’ve forgotten to water them for months! Overall it’s better to err on the side of less water rather than more in terms of frequency. Succulents tend to die off much easier by being over watered rather than being under watered.

Tips to Improve and Simplify Watering Succulents:

  3. Water heavily and infrequently: Don’t use spray bottles! The only time to use a spray bottle is if you are propagating succulent leaves. I’ll get more into that at in a later post!
